This post has taken me a little while to put together, partly because I’ve been trying to soak in every moment of the newborn magic, and partly because it all got a little crazy the week we brought Lily home. If you follow me on Instagram, which I try to update at least every couple of days, you’ll know that not long after we brought the baby home, Grace fell down the stairs and broke her collar bone. I was an absolute wreck that week between my heightened postnatal hormones and the shock of the accident (this was the first injury of any sort for Grace). But she has been an absolute trooper ever since. She’s been so brave, has barely complained and is bouncing back faster than I thought imaginable… but I’ll leave that story for another day.
Lily Rose Peterson was born May 22 at 10:22pm, one day after my due date. Eight hours of labour and a quick (fifteen minute) delivery made up for a long and arduous nine months! At the risk of this sounding completely cliche, she is the most perfect baby and the absolute love of our lives! I genuinely didn’t think I could love another baby as much as Grace, but it’s amazing how somehow there’s room. You really can love two children the same. But what I wasn’t prepared for at all was how much Grace would love her little sister. I was so worried about her feeling jealous and adjusting to a new family dynamic that I didn’t prepare myself for the opposite! Grace is absolutely in love with her! It was apparent almost immediately. As soon as Lily was put into her arms at the hospital she kissed her a million times, and the look on her face was nothing short of pure joy. I didn’t realize just how much their relationship would mean to me, but it’s probably one of the most rewarding things out of all of this. She’s been like a mummy to Lily, caring for her, holding her, singing to her… everything but change her diaper! (funny, I’m the only one who does that). The day we brought her home from the hospital, Eric set Lily down in her car seat in the living room. Eric and I must have been in the kitchen a minute or two, and when we looked back Grace had taken out all her doctors kits, baby toys and blankets and Lily was surrounded… it was like a real life toy hospital! She just loves her new role as big sister.
Two weeks in and we are still just as in love! Of course its been a little crazy with Grace’s fall, adjusting to a new routine and lots of sleepless nights, but we couldn’t feel luckier. Welcome to the family Lily Rose!
